My fiber art work is all about color and rhythm. I choose from hundreds of fabrics: hand-dyed, hand-painted, batiks and commercial prints, which I have either collected or created myself. To give my work artistic presence I have chosen to mat and frame most of my work for stunning contempory wall art.
The tools for my fabric landscapes are simple; a small scissors and fusible webbing. Using a free form cutting
technique and working intuitively with color and natural forms, each landscape is built up in layers. Dimension and textural interest is then added using a variety of art mediums. This method allows the freedom to create art with fabric as a painter would with paint. Most of my inspiration comes from photos I have taken of the rural Iowa landscape where I live.
Traditional quilt blocks are strong in graphic design and simple in construction with limitless variations. My quilt blocks are first designed on the computer, then sewn by machine using a paper foundation piecing method of construction. Framing allows the completed quilts to enhance both traditional and contempory home decor.
My love of fabric and art began as a young child. I grew up in rural Iowa and learned to sew at an early age. I
began my artistic career after graduating from UNI in Cedar Falls, Iowa with a degree in art education. I
have taught art to all age levels. In 1997, Fabrications was established and I began selling my work at art
fairs in the Midwest and shipping work all over the US. Although I am not in a traditional art classroom any more,
I still love teaching. You might find me teaching in local fabric stores, giving workshops to quilt guilds or at
a sewing expo, all for the love of art and fabric. Wherever it takes me, I will follow.
